The scent of fresh-turned soil and dust on the breeze drifted across a “Beautiful, quiet field,” between Keating Farm Road and Mile Hill South Tuesday, May 7, said Harvey Pessin. He watched as Parks and Recreation machinery graded earth, preparing a new site for the community-oriented Victory Garden that he founded three years ago.

“This could not be a more lovely spot, and you don’t often hear me say that,” he said, looking across a space that will soon hold a 20,000-square-foot, half -acre garden — twice the size of the current garden. He envisions the room he will have for planting blueberry bushes and a small orchard in addition to the traditional herbs, vegetables, and flowers planted in the past. The site has water available and low road noise, a lot of sun, and a view of a “beautiful red barn.” The barn sits on private property across Mile Hill South.

Until Tuesday morning, Mr Pessin was unsure of where garden volunteers would be tending their rows this year. In past months, the Newtown Ambulance Association has come closer in its plans to break ground for a new garage that will take the space where the garden has grown for the past two years in Fairfield Hills across from Reed Intermediate School.

Will this site be a permanent home for the garden that supplies fresh produce for the FAITH Food Pantry and Nunnawauk Meadows? “You can’t quote me, or anybody on that,” he said. “No guarantees.”

He was “getting nervous,” he admitted. He hopes to plant by May 15, and as with many gardeners, he has started his seeds growing at home and will get them in the ground this month to yield summer crops.

The expanded garden will allow Mr Pessin to invite more groups to work the land. “I hate to turn anyone away,” he said. Thanks to a host of donations, financial and otherwise, the garden this year can include cherry and apple trees, and a professional mesh deer fence. He anticipated that grading would be done by Tuesday evening, and in coming days Parks and Recreation crews would bulldoze and backhoe the site: “It’s the easiest garden I have ever put in,” joked Mr Pessin. Soil will be improved with compost from New England Resources, but Mr Pessin wants to wait for the fence installation before putting plants in the ground. Wholesale supplier Planters Choice of Newtown will also provide seedlings.

Goals For The Year

His goal this year, as in the past, is to “set up the garden as a springboard for other groups to do things.” Explaining, he said that Eagle Scout projects have taken place at the garden, school groups have formed gardening teams, Ability Beyond Disability also tends a row. “It’s a community garden supported by the community,” he said.

He encourages people to use the garden to “teach children where food comes from,” he said. He is aware of several families that hope to teach their children to also raise and harvest food.

“This will be a great project,” he said. With the work under way, he will begin contacting past gardeners. Those wishing to form a group and tend a row should contact Mr Pessin at Harve9@yahoo.com. The garden has just a few rules: no use of herbicides or pesticides, all food is donated, and participants should come up with a funny gardening team name.

Learn more by visiting FoodPantryGarden.org.

The website announces to volunteers this year, “Volunteers should form teams, and will be given a 150-square-foot plot of garden. Each team should have a placard on its row with a team name, the funnier the better.

“There are no fees associated with the garden. No non-organic herbicides or pesticides are allowed in the garden. Fertilizers are allowed. All produce is to be donated to the needy.

“Last year’s volunteers get right of first refusal. Volunteers can ‘own a row,’ or volunteer on an ad hoc basis as the need arises. Since we have a lot more space, we can accommodate a lot more volunteers, so please pass this email around to friends and neighbors. Together, let’s make The Victory Garden the best of Newtown.”

And if spring is coming, it must be time to start thinking about gardening. The Victory Garden is in the process of moving from its original site to another site on Keatings Farm Road near the Mile Hill gate. This move will allow the garden to double in size, and thanks to some very generous donors, the new garden will have high tensile steel woven deer fencing. As in the past, Park & Rec will cultivate the soil, and provide water. The site has full sun, and parking is nearby. In the past, local horticultural companies have donated vegetable starts, and I expect these donations to continue this year. This is as close to fantasy gardening as you can get. Just show up.

Tarren Horvath added his creative and beneficial touch to the Fairfield Hills campus this week. He built an informational kiosk for the Victory Garden as his Eagle Scout project, which he told the Fairfield Hills Authority members on February 15. By Tuesday, February 21, the rustic sign-board was in place.

The Victory Garden, located at Fairfield Hills, is a volunteer project to grow and provide produce to the town’s food pantries. The garden is approaching its second season.

Intending to build the information center with “so people can leave notes or post information for other gardeners,” Tarren described the freestanding, portable kiosk with cedar shingles to protect it from weather.

“I hope people find it to be helpful,” he told the authority. “I hope it is put to good use.”

The group’s new chairman, James Bernardi, said, “We’re all supporters of scouting, and [the kiosk] is a good idea.” Member Ross Carley asked Tarren if the board would have room to hold trail maps for walking areas on the Fairfield Hills campus, and other information.

“Sure, I can incorporate that,” Tarren said.

Originally planning a different project at Fairfield Hills, Tarren learned about the Victory Garden and contacted its founder Harvey Pessin.

Visitors to the Fairfield Hills campus can see the new kiosk as they drive past Woodbury and Newtown Halls, beyond the old tennis court.

A Harvest Of Compassion

To the Editor:

I am writing on behalf of the management and residents of Nunnawauk Meadows to express our special thanks to Harvey Pessin, Victory Garden director, Lee Paulsen, FAITH Food Pantry director, and all of the hardworking volunteers who helped plant, harvest, and deliver the delicious vegetables from the Victory Garden during these past few months. Even the wrath of Hurricane Irene couldn’t prevent these tireless workers from distributing all the salvageable fresh produce to Newtown’s families in need.

The members of the Nunnawauk Meadows community are very appreciative of the time and effort spent to include them in the Victory Garden’s distribution plans. The twice-weekly deliveries not only enhanced their quality of life but also demonstrated the compassion of their neighbors.

We truly appreciate your support of Newtown’s senior and disabled residents and wish you continued success with the Victory Garden in the years to come.

Sincerely,

Linda E. Manganaro

Executive Director

Nunnawauk Meadows

FALL 2012 – Dear Volunteers,

Holly Kocet and her merry band of picker have picked their last peck of
peppers . In preparation to Tuesday’s rain storm, they picked as much as they
could today (Monday). Carole Ando also spent 2 1/2 hours picking today. All this
bounty will be delivered to the food pantries on Tuesday. However, there may
still be some vegetables that may need harvesting. As each volunteer team is
responsible for their own row, I urge all teams to make their best effort to
harvest as much as they can. If circumstances don’t allow additional harvesting,
contact me, and I’ll see if I can find a solution.

As the garden winds down for the
season, it is very important that garden weeds and debris be kept to a minimum.
Garden weeds will continue to put out seeds, which will be a problem next year,
and debris will harbor pests and diseases over the winter. Please clean up your
rows as best you can in preparation for next year. It would also be nice for the
garden to look nice when we have our fall home festival on September 25 from 3-6
pm.

Please put all garden refuse on the compost pile on the outside of the
chain link fence. That pile will be very useful next year.

Enjoy a taste of Newtown’s Victory Garden at its Harvest Home Picnic on September 25 at the Fairfield Hills location from 2 to 5 pm. “This should be super!” said Parks and Recreation Director Amy Mangold. Local musicians will entertain during a picnic welcoming residents to taste the home-grown yield following the garden’s first year in operation. Volunteers since the spring had tilled rows of fresh vegetables, flowers, and herbs to support Newtown’s food pantries.

Two days after Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene created confusion and canceled plans across town, Victory Garden Coordinator Harvey Pessin did his best to continue business as usual. “I was going to plan it all this week, but I can’t get in touch with anybody.” Like most residents doing their best this week to cope with loss of electricity, he was out in town trying to speak with people including Ms Mangold, who is also looking forward to the harvest picnic.

A scarecrow wears its gardening hat and sunglasses and overlooks the many rows of growing fruits, flowers, and herbs in the Victory Garden at Fairfield Hills.

In an office powered by a generator at the Town Hall South location behind the Newtown Police Department, Ms Mangold was at work and quickly able to access by computer all the details: “Volunteer gardeners can bring their own meals, and something to share,” she said. The afternoon’s shared meal and music is meant to celebrate the garden and the volunteers and officials who cooperated to make it possible.

Mr Pessin thanks officials for making the site available to them, and the recreation department crews for doing much of the site work. Both he and Ms Mangold hope that all the volunteers bring along someone new who has never visited the garden, Ms Mangold said.

“We hope to raise awareness,” she said.

Although planning parties is “uncharted territory for me,” Mr Pessin hopes the garden’s first harvest party is well attended.

See the garden’s Facebook page at The Victory Garden Supporting Newtown’s Food Pantries, and visit the website at www.FoodPantryGarden.org. The party rain date is October 2.
